I know exactly what you mean. This can be shown clearly with GEMBench
Blitting and VDI scrolling tests.

Exit highlighting is bad IMO. STraight FAX uses this trick, but I don't
like it at all. I don't like or want point-to-type. 3 is fine and makes
sense. I don't mind 4.
